Leg Thread Veins

You do not need to hide your legs or let blemishes spoil your fun - call us today on 01908 693400 for a consultation.

Thread veins is used to describe unsightly superficial veins that are commonly found in clusters on the legs. They are usually harmless but can cause people to be self-conscious especially when using the swimming pool or in summer months when legs are exposed.

The cause of thread veins is not known but inheritance plays an important role. Also trauma, pregnancy, weight gain/loss and lack of exercise may be a factor.

Our preferred treatment for leg thread veins is microsclerotherapy, a safe and effective treatment which has been used for many years. Dr Boye will inject a small liquid (called sclerosing solution) into the tiny thread veins; it immediately starts to work on the inner surface of the veins and triggers your body's natural healing to cause them to seal up.

Although there are other methods for treating leg (thread) veins, microsclerotherapy remains the gold standard as it seals not only the thread veins but also the 'feeder' veins causing them. As part of our vein care package we prescribe various types of hosiery which reduce the build-up of pressure in the legs veins and slow the progression of thread or varicose veins. These stockings are medical products designed to please the 'fashionista'; they come in different colours, designs and fabric to complement your wardrobe. They are available for both men and women.

FAQs

What is sclerotherapy?

It is the injection of a medicine into superficial veins to cause their lining to swell and close up. It is a cosmetic procedure to remove or improve the appearance of thread veins.

How is it done?

An initial assessment  is carried out to ensure this procedure is suitable for you and the veins are of the right calibre. The assessment is done with you in standing position while treatment is carried out with you in lying position.

A solution is injected, with a very tiny needle, into the vein to be treated and compression is then applied for a variable length of time. The treated vein gradually shrinks or fades away.

What to expect after treatment?

Thread veins are very fragile and look worse for the first few weeks after treatment. The true effect is seen between 2 and 3 months although some bigger flares may take longer.

What happens after sclerotherapy?

You can resume work immediately after treatment and walking is advised. Wear your compression hosiery as advised.

Is sclerotherapy permanent?

The treated vein will be absorbed by the body over a period of 3 months and should not recur; however, new ones could appear in the same area.

Is it painful?

Sclerotherapy need not be painful as the needle used for injection is very fine. Most clients report only very mild and temporary discomfort if any at all.

Can I get deep vein thrombosis?

No. There are 2 drainage systems in the legs - superficial and deep. Because we are only injecting into the superficial vessels you won't get deep vein thrombosis.

How many treatments will I need?

Up to 4 treatment sessions my be required. Treatments are carried out 6-12 weeks apart. A top-up session may be required every 2 -3 years.
