Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the muscle. It is used to treat dynamic lines and result in smoothening of lines and wrinkles.

Botox type injections of which there are various brands - Botox, Vistabel, Xeomin, Dysport, Azzalure, Bocouture - have become increasingly popular and are now the commonest non-surgical cosmetic treatment.

Botox is often used for treating lines and wrinkles in the upper face - between the eyes (glabellar lines), forehead or around the eyes (crow's feet) but Bloom Healthcare offers other advanced botox treatments.

Botox is injected under the skin. The effects of botox start to show around a week after treatment and last for 3-4 months.

What are dynamic and static wrinkles?

Wrinkles are the result of ageing, smoking, sun damage and genetic inheritance. There are 2 types: dynamic and static.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated muscle contraction or overactivity. Frown (glabellar) lines, forehead (tram) lines and crow's feet (laughter lines) belong to this category and are best treated with Botox.

Static wrinkles are present even when you are still.  They are caused by loss of volume. Example includes the creases from the nose to the corners of the mouth. They can be treated with cosmetic fillers.
